Powerful. Precious. Worthy.

In Harmony Therapeutic Services is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts therapy practice staffed by board certified music therapists. Our team offers music therapy and music enrichment programs to support individuals of all ages in achieving personalized, non-musical goals that may include learning academic concepts, improving communication, and building social and emotional skills. In Harmony also consults with teachers, artists, and other professionals as well as parents and caregivers and provides professional development on how the arts can be used to connect with and promote an individual’s overall well-being. It is our hope that our work helps each individual we serve live in harmony with themselves and the world around them.

Trauma-informed music therapy

What makes In Harmony special is our dedication to being trauma-informed. Traumatic experiences can affect all of us and can create feelings of helplessness, vulnerability, loss of safety, and loss of control. Serious and/or prolonged exposure – especially in children – can have a lasting impact on the brain, negatively impact students’ foundations for learning, and lead to behavioral issues and difficulty in forming positive relationships. In Harmony has trained in trauma and learning through the Lesley Institute for Trauma Sensitivity and pairs music with trauma-informed supports to help each individual feel powerful, precious, and worthy.

What our clients are saying

  • During Distance Learning, Ms. Alicia joined (classroom)’s Morning Meeting Zoom calls twice. When she led the children in writing their own lyrics to House Party, she guided the children to a positive perspective of the difficult circumstances of the Stay at Home orders. When she guided the children in a musical mindfulness activity, she brought such calm to the class, that several children spontaneously commented that they felt peace and relaxation throughout their entire bodies.

  • Alicia Hrubey gave the children an amazing musical opportunity. The children really looked forward to her class each week. She introduced many concepts of learning through music and built in ways to self-regulate and calm behaviors through music. Some of her teaching help[ed] children learn to work together, take turns, be patient with one another. Alicia incorporated social awareness, following directions, body regulation and participation into her music lessons and I could see growth in the children throughout the school year. Music and songs helped with language, counting, colors and touches on really every part of learning throughout the environment and curriculum.

  • The time I spent with Alicia provided benefits beyond my expectations. The information she presented about trauma and how it relates to students’ behaviors was eye opening, and her real life teaching strategies were tailored to fit my needs. I look forward to learning more from her in the future.

  • Alicia Hrubey provided an excellent professional development session to our staff about Music and Special Learners. Her session included many, many practical examples that I was able to implement in my classroom immediately! Her enthusiasm, compassion, and knowledge of a true picture of today’s classroom was refreshing and encouraging. She presented both the scientific explanations about the development of the brain as well as a view of the behaviors that manifest from those situations and what they look like in the classroom. Her presentation was affirming and enlightening! It was time well spent to increase my understanding of my students’ behaviors and how I can help set them up for success in my classroom and in their futures.

  • This is the kind of professional development music teachers need and want so we can truly tap into the way that our special discipline can help all students learn, grow, create and feel safe. The highly enlightening, power packed presentation was streamlined to cater to our questions and requests, and I took away several ideas and strategies that I began to employ immediately in my teaching.
